The little timing chain thing does not happen to all cars.
If it were such a awful used car, nobody would be buying them.
The extremely mechanically inclined can do it themselves for $2,150-$3,150. That includes renting the tools.
That's not that much money. Go replace the battery on a Toyota Prius, come back to me and then we'll talk again.
I honestly don't care the slightest, even if I had to perform that repair. I still would love to have a B6 S4.

Buddy has an 04 and its a pretty great car. Also the PO did the timing chain already so no worries.

#4 - There are Prii with well over 300k miles on the original battery pack.

Damn that's like twice what most timing chains go for *parts and labor* if you're not doing it yourself! I thought chains were under $100 and didn't need replacing!
I'm going to guess they're interference engines, right?
At least there's the IS-F :)

They really are, I'd love to own one. I also spy a B5 in that picture?

It was supposed to last the life of the car, but yeeahhhhh about that. Long story short, they didn't and are not easy to get to.
![]() 03/20/2015 at 23:09 |

I almost bought one before I got my Mazdaspeed 6, which I have since gotten rid of.
In the scheme of things, it gets absolute shit mileage for the amount of acceleration you get, and it's nose heavy as fuck.
If I had gotten the S4 it probably wouldn't have rusted as much as that MS6 did. But still. Meh. Closest I ever got to buying a VAG product and happy I didn't.

SSSSHHHHHHH... Let's keep it a secret. They are properly badass cars when right. Overstated chain issues and all, that V8 is one of the all time German greats. I'd have a B7 myself, but a V8 S4 Avant with a 6-speed is on my short list of daddy wagons in the future if I can't find the 95.5 S6 Avant of my dreams.

I usually talk to the drivers when I get a taxi here - some of them don't even get turned off. Heard 400K plus on a Prius, and 500K on an Escape Hybrid. Original batteries as far as the driver knew. They are still keeping some Crown Vics running - 800K is the highest I've heard on one.

I'm not even sure, I do know that the S4 has infinite aftermarket performance modifications and that the Cts v had some dif problem or something.
I couldn't live with the Cts-v interior styling at all, looks horrible in my opinion. I'm just not a fan of it in general.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 00:26 |

You buy an Audi S4, specifically the V8 one, because you f**king love Audi. Quattro, elegance, sound, speed, and luxury appeal to your interests. You don't buy one because it will be cheap or reliable, you buy it for the fulfillment it will give you when you outrun a Mustang in something that looks like a family sedan.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 00:30 |
|
Defensive a bit?
But seriously - if you want the car, the only important thing is that you know your position going in. Do you have to do the front end? Does it need brakes, tires, a fuel pump? And lots of people buy unreliable cars, but they can work on them (or they get a CarMax warranty). And that's fine. For me, at this point, with no garage, I need something reliable. But a W-12 something-or-other that floats your boat? Fine by me.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 00:32 |

Your bias is overwhelming here.
Only think about good S4 things. And the CTS V probably has a dif problem or something.

As much as we like to rag on them, I guarantee they will still be running when the last Miata rusts away.

Perhaps - I don't hate any car, really, and I've had more than a few Prius rentals. They're very capable cars. The hybrid I like the least? A Honda Insight from Zipcar about 4 years ago. Stop/start made me crazy, and too small. Best? Like the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and the CRV we rented 2 years ago to pick up the cats we adopted (exit 63 off the Long Island Expressway - the end of the earth). Off Zipcar because they treated me like shit. Need to find a place w/ 3 series BMWs again.

Have one with 70k. Car is really awesome. I have a lot of fun with the car and have tracked it once at thunderhill which it was so much better than I imagined. Didn't feel the weight and the brakes were superb not fading while driving the car full out. I was able to absolutely whoop on some much faster cars. Anyhow for being capable of snow and ice, some track fun, being a luxury cruiser and having a nice v8 it's a great car. I was a little sad when I looked at the value of it now, I don't get it. Anyways no problems here other than an electric window breaking. Also I purchased an extended warranty which is going to be up soon.
Anyhow go ahead and go get your new electric steering smaller cylinder car for more money, and I'll stick with this. I've driven a modified newer s4 with a manual special ordered. It felt artificial. I like the heavier germanic feel to the b6.

The first interior is absolutely horrid. I don't think there is a single soft touch material.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 08:51 |

You've CLEARLY never been in one. Literally every surface except the center console is padded. Dashboard, armrest, door panels, steering wheel center.
I'm all for listening to complaints about cars, just make sure you got experience with em besides what you read on the internet before you form an opinion.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 08:56 |

Dude biased much? This is in no way better than the CTS interior. CTS has waaaay better ergonomics and an actually useable touch screen.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 09:20 |
|
I've sat in both and hated the early CTS-V interior. The S4 comes with factory Recaro seats and the interior is more or less the same as the B7 A4 which I've owned in the past and the interior was great. Everything was not cheap, good to touch, there was actual trim and the plastic wasn't so abundant.
I'm not biased as much, if you stuck an Audi badge on the Cadillac interior I still wouldn't like it at all.
What is better about the ergonomics? I'd actually like to know.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 09:30 |
|
The whole center stack is significantly tilted toward the driver, which although it doesn't really appear that way, it's very apparent once you pop a squat in one. You should have noticed this if you've been on one.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 09:36 |

I don't really consider that ergonomics though, more of a styling cue. I am aware that the nav system on the B7 (Different that the one pictured in the B6) was openly shite. That way I'd never need to look down there anyways since I'd just use Waze. Fun fact is that Audi Nav+ was also used in the Lamborghini Galladro.
This one pictured is the one. If you pressed that little button next to the volume control, the screen would flip down and you could stick in a CD or SD card in there.

SHUT UP. SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP
I DONT WANT THE PRICES FOR THESE SKYROCKETING YOU NITWIT
as for the VAG hate: oppo hive-mind does some stupid shit. VAG hate, priasing the Fiesta ST, manual is best, etc etc
Though I would get a B7 S4 wagon and put on a RS4 front clip. then make it purple.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 11:17 |

NEITHER DO I, SO I CAN AFFORD ONE!
I don't understand it at all, one particular FP writer takes every opportunity to discredit them for pretty much everything, which rubs off on Oppo. Every..... Single..... Time I bring up the S4, somebody links me to that one article.
And that looks excellent in purple, especially with those wheels, the stance isn't half bad though. I'd predict bags on that one.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 11:54 |

In that comparison, the Audi is the one with the Fisher-Price interior.
I mean, seriously, look at this garbage:
And compare to:
And the latter is not even a promo shot. All the Audi has on the CTS-V is the wheel.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 17:52 |

VAG has a lot of complicated vehicles. On the other hand, try changing the water pump in a V6 Camry. So many variables - do you service the car, do you pamper the car, do you use OEM parts? Do you drive like a knucklehead? Somewhere out there is a grandma with an '02 Passat with over 200K on it who has only replaced tires, bulbs, and the battery a couple times. There's also a guy with a Lexus LS460 that's in the shop every other month - it's 700-dollaring him to death. You never know.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 18:15 |

Uhhhh, dude I wasn't talking about that generation. I was talking about the PREVIOUS one. Look at the other comments of the same subject first. The current gen CTS-V goes way over what I'd have to pay.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 18:17 |
|
I do all the work on both A4s I've owned myself. I only brought my first A4 into the shop for a warranty problem, and besides that only alignments and that stuff call for a visit to the shop. If you take care of the car well, do preventative maintenance and keep up to date with service items, you'll have a non hateful car that'll treat you well.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 18:28 |
|
Ooops!
I often forget that there even was a generation of CTS before that one. I was in 5th grade when it came out and wasn't into cars, so it slips by.
It's also pretty shite all around, if you ask me.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 18:34 |

My niece has an A4 - I haven't asked her about her experience, but then again dad takes care of all the maintenance.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 19:03 |
|
Like, if I was offered that gen CTS-V or the B6 S4, I'd go for the CTS-V because duhhhhhh.
I'm not a huge fan of the 1st gen one at all, the cost cutting really shows.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 19:05 |
|
They're really not bad at all to maintain. Keep the oil changed, fluids topped, replace wear items before they go wrong and keep a service manual nearby and you're about good to go.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 19:16 |
|
What bugs me about Audi is that the interior looks cheap...and it still looks that way even in the new cars. The sterile, rounded, blank, plastic look is something they've made iconic to their cars at least since the original TT (which I maintain is a stylistic travesty).
So, the OG CTS-V is awful, but the B6 really isn't much better (even outside, actually). I'd sooner just pick an entirely different car from those two options.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 19:43 |
|
I personally love the new interiors, they feel super solid, look great and there's lots of color options.
Trust me, the B6 is 100x better on the inside.
![]() 03/21/2015 at 19:51 |

I dunno, man. Granted, we are talking about my least favorite period of automobile history, but I'd have a hard time going S4 over M3 based on styling and price (both seem to be around $15,000) alone:
![]() 03/21/2015 at 20:57 |

Ooh a C4 S6 Avant. Once they're 25, I want to bring over a C4 S6 Avant Plus with the 4.2 V8 that they sold in Europe. I had an A6 avant of that generation for a while and it really made me yearn for the S6
![]() 03/22/2015 at 18:47 |

My buddy has this car, and he absolutely loves it. Went to Portland to buy it and bring it back to Seattle. I know for a fact he enjoys the car every single time he drives it. I’ve had it at 125 and it’s a solid ride for sure, and it can corner pretty aggressively above 80. Drives like a dream, and you can easily get the kids and the dog in the back.
His timing chain blew last week. Sucks, but I highly doubt it’s going to do much to change his opinion about the car, nor should it. If a car is that good to you then it’s worth it.
